Job Summary
Research assistant, cancer care
Your goal in this position is to provide assistance, organization, and administrative support to research projects at a basic level. You have excellent communication (verbal/written), organizational and interpersonal skills; attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills. You have the ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and the flexibility to adapt to changing workloads. You are also able to work independently and in a team. Flexibility is required for work beyond the job description, sometimes depending on job requirements. This position supports the academic mandate of the hospital by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation.
This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families.The research assistant will work on the Compassionate Conversations for Chinese Immigrants with Serious Illness trial, led by Dr. Zhimeng Jia (clinician researcher at LTRI). The research assistant plays a vital role in investigating culturally appropriate palliative care communication among Chinese immigrant patients admitted to the hospital.On a practical level, you
- Collect, record and process data
- Participants in the interview/selection study, if applicable
- Transcribe recorded interviews, if applicable
- Carry out documentary research
- Interact with many hospital services
- Interact with various stakeholders, such as research team members and study participants
- Schedule appointments for research studies, including research team meetings
- Perform general office tasks
- Participate in other tasks as needed and as they arise
Qualifications
- Community college diploma or relevant experience
- A minimum of one year of recent, related experience or familiarity with a research environment in a palliative care setting is preferred.
- Meets institutional requirements for clinical interpreting in Mandarin (Have completed a 70-hour language interpreter training program or interpreting diploma/diploma from an accredited university or college – e.g. LITP or LITC; Have completed ILSAT or CILSAT; Have in-depth knowledge of and adhere to the Code of Conduct for Interpreters; Experience in interpreting in a healthcare environment;
- Mastery of NVIVO desired
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
- Experience with increasing responsibility in a clerk position
- Basic computer skills, particularly databases, spreadsheets and word processing
- Able to keep written records
- Able to understand written and verbal instructions
- Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills are required
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
- Bilingual French/English an asset

This is a full-time temporary position (10-week contract) with 8-hour shifts, days, in the cancer department. We offer a very competitive compensation package which includes compensation in lieu of benefits, vacation pay and the opportunity to join the hospital pension plan.
