This position is responsible for the development and support of international students, as well as the development, coordination, communication and ongoing evaluation of programs designedensure the successful transition and retention of this key constituency at Ontario Tech, in line with Ontario Tech’s Internationalization Strategy, the Student Experience and Student Life Centre strategies, and Ontario Tech’s Strategic Plan.Responsibilities/accountabilities:1. Student development and support:

  • Advocate for international student services to address unmet needs.
  • Recruits, trains and supervises co-op students, volunteers and the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) student group, who help promote the academic, personal and professional development of international students at Ontario Tech. This position is responsible for the development and support of international students, as well as the development, coordination, communication and ongoing evaluation of programs designed to ensure the successful transition and retention of this key group at Ontario Tech, in accordance with Ontario Tech’s Internationalization Strategy, the Student Experience and Student Life Centre strategies, and the Ontario Tech Strategic Plan, with the development and implementation of programs and supports for international students or WUSC-sponsored students.
  • Supports students experiencing transition difficulties and provides them with appropriate advice, guidance, interventions or resources
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures to meet the changing needs of international students
  • Provide advice and support to international students on various topics such as, but not limited to, accommodation, cultural adjustments, personal concerns and other aspects related to adjusting to life and study in Canada.
  • Staff Advisor to the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Student Group and oversees and supports the Student Refugee Program (SRP) through WUSC

2. Development, coordination and evaluation of the program:

  • Conducts research on the needs of international, exchange and new immigrant students, including engagement
  • students, staff and faculty in collaborative evaluation of supports, services and programs
  • Collaborates with campus stakeholders to develop student development activities on campus and articulate program outcomes for specific projects.
  • Researches, designs, develops, delivers and evaluates results-based educational programs and support services for international students including: individual advising, workshops and events, peer mentoring, community building, leadership, orientation and transition programs.
  • Uses professional standards to develop results-oriented programs
  • Evaluates and reports on initiatives to determine which efforts meet student needs and generate desired outcomes to make evidence-based decisions about future programming.
  • Develops and delivers workshops, trainings and updates to promote understanding of the international student experience and intercultural communication
  • Plan, develop, implement and evaluate appropriate institutional programs and events organized to support the retention, success, integration and engagement of new and existing international students

3. Communication:

  • Curates web content for current international students.
  • Works with campus partners to ensure that web content on all Ontario Tech pages is accessible and relevant to international students, making recommendations where appropriate based on feedback from students and relevant campus partners.
  • Creates and maintains the international student newsletter
  • Creates and contributes to additional forms of communication for the international office – website, social media, posters.

4. Support for immigration:

  • Develops content to share with students and staff on various immigration-related topics
  • Develops and delivers immigration information sessions for staff and students
  • Communicates immigration changes to students as they occur
  • Keeping campus partners informed of regulatory changes and their impact on students
  • Responds to student and staff inquiries on immigration-related topics
  • Makes individual appointments with students regarding their immigration documents and responsibilities

5. Support for the International Office project:

  • Assists in working on ad hoc projects related to the internationalization of Ontario Tech as needed; examples could be specialized grant applications, surveys, communications from the International Office to the campus community – website updates, social media, etc.

  • Excellent computer skills including: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet applications;
  • Demonstrated presentation and facilitation skills, as well as the ability to communicate with a diverse population;
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment;
  • Initiative, sense of organization and time management;
  • Good judgment, flexibility and adaptability;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships

Training required:

  • A minimum of four-year bachelor’s degree is required, with preference given to candidates with a professional or graduate degree in education, student development, higher education, or educational leadership.
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • The holder must be registered and in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) and accredited as a Regulated International Student Immigration Consultant (RISIC) or Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).
  • Verification of academic credentials may be required

Experience required:

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Experience providing support and/or counselling services to international students in a post-secondary setting
  • Experience in a professional or paraprofessional program development role
  • Experience in program evaluation and assessment
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and/or substantial international experience
  • Training and/or demonstrable experience in intercultural communication and skills development

Awareness:

  • Knowledge of group dynamics and experience in leading, planning and facilitating groups; and
  • An understanding of student development theories (as they relate to international students) and their implications for student learning and student development programming.
