Job description: Institutional Advisor (Contract)Red Deer, AB, Canada Application #503Wednesday October 2, 2024Catholic Social Services is currently recruiting for a Residential Counselor (37.5 hours/week) in Red Deer who speaks Swahili, Rohingya, Amharic, Somali or Hausa.This is a contractual position which will end on March 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension.
Job summary:
As a settlement counselor, you work directly with new immigrants and refugees to support a smooth transition to life in Canada. You assess client needs and develop service plans using a case management model. Throughout your career, you have developed strong interview and assessment skills, as well as an in-depth knowledge of community resources. As a strong collaborator, you develop partnerships with other service providers, clients and cultural communities to build on the strengths of newly arrived families. You are an insightful teacher of core skills (transportation, employment, healthcare, etc.) and have honed your coaching and consulting skills to maximize the success of the clients you support.
Job duties:
- Assess the client’s needs, determine the types of services required and develop a service plan.
- Meet assessed needs by providing services or referrals to services to meet critical needs (e.g., housing, food, finances, health, education, parenting, safety, language) as well as assistance in understanding how to access services traditional if necessary, providing clients with practical information and cultural and social orientation on life in Canada; provide or obtain interpretation and translation support as required.
- Defend the interests of clients with institutions, employers, owners, schools, etc.
- Plan and coordinate settlement-related activities and programs for newcomer groups.
- Conduct case management meetings to ensure client needs are met.
- Assist in the production and delivery of materials and orientation and awareness sessions for the designated population.
- Establish networks with other settlement counselors, community groups and centers, faith communities, cultural organizations, schools, daycares, etc.
- Collect client feedback (e.g., distribute surveys, workshop evaluations, etc.) to track settlement service results.
- Documentation, including customer files, reports and statistics.
- Understands funding requirements and expected service objectives.
What this job requires:
- A related degree/diploma in a human services discipline
- 2 years of experience working with newcomers to Canada
- Proficient in computer software, particularly Microsoft Office, and have the ability to learn new programs
- AAISA certification is considered an asset.
- Summary of clear and current drivers
- A vehicle and a valid Class 5 driving license – obligation to transport customers in your personal vehicle
- Proof of vehicle insurance showing $2 million in liability coverage
- Proof of registration of the insured vehicle
- Vulnerable sector check of local RCMP or municipal police detachment
- Checking the child intervention file
- In addition to English, you must be fluent in Swahili, Rohingya, Amharic, Somali or Hausa languages.
