Job Summary
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) models the clinical excellence and core competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards of practice, as well as the policies and procedures of the Regional Health Center of Southlake (Southlake). The LPN works collaboratively as a member of the healthcare team. The LPN provides direct patient care in accordance with the standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario. These factors impact decision-making related to care provider assignment as well as the need for consultation and collaboration among care providers. All nurses are committed to lifelong learning.Main responsibilities
- Provides patient and family centered care within the LPN scope of practice, based on the College of Nurses of Ontario’s three-factor framework.
- Operates in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
- Ensure practice is consistent with entry-to-practice competencies, practice standards, guidelines and legislation.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families and all members of the healthcare team.
- Practices collaboratively with Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide elements of care to patients/clients with complex health conditions.
- Practices collaboratively with other members of the interprofessional health care team.
- Provides consultation and/or clinical support to peers as needed
- Contributes to the assessment and documentation of each patient’s health status on an ongoing basis.
- Assists in the development and implementation of the plan of care and evaluates its ongoing effectiveness.
- Assist in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff and students on clinical units.
- Acts as a role model and champion to identify and integrate best safety practices into daily activities to promote the delivery of safe and exemplary care.
- Other tasks assigned by the manager/delegate.
Skills and Abilities
- Two years of current operating room experience an asset
- Ability to prioritize and organize work in response to patient/client needs
- Ability to function within the full scope of nursing practice according to the College of Nurses of Ontario

- Must provide proof of enrollment in a recognized perioperative course to begin at time of application.
- Successful completion of the theoretical component of a recognized perioperative course
- Certificate of LPN registration, in good standing, from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Proficiency in BCLS
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated problem assessment skills
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service and teamwork
- Demonstrated individual leadership skills

- LPN diploma from a recognized nursing school
- Certificate of LPN registration, in good standing, from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current BLS certification required
- Have completed the required IPA operating room course
